A firefighter is currently receiving emergency medical treatment at the Tema General Hospital after a collapsed wall struck him during a fierce overnight blaze at the Tema Industrial Area.

The industrial fire, which broke out at approximately 00:40 GMT on Tuesday morning, ripped through a facility housing rubber products and takeaway food packaging materials, destroying property worth thousands of cedi.

Speaking in an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I (ADOI) Alex King Nartey confirmed the incident, detailing the intense efforts required to bring the situation under control.

According to ADOI Nartey, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) dispatched four fire tenders drawn from the Tema Industrial, Devtraco, Motorway, and Freezones fire stations to combat the heavy inferno.

“Our men worked tirelessly through the night to contain the spread of the fire, given the highly combustible nature of the rubber and plastic materials inside the warehouse,” ADOI Nartey told Rainbow Radio.

While battling the blaze, a section of the building’s perimeter wall caved in, trapping and injuring one of the officers on duty. Other firefighters on the scene suffered minor injuries during the operation.

The severely injured firefighter was immediately rushed to the Tema General Hospital, where medical staff are currently attending to him.

Although the main fire has now been completely extinguished, fire crews remain at the scene conducting salvage and overhauling operations to cool down hot spots and prevent any potential re-ignition.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and full investigations into the outbreak are expected to commence as soon as the site is declared fully safe.
