The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has explained that the stalled rehabilitation of the Kaneshie Market footbridges is a direct result of ongoing construction under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development [GARID] Project.

Addressing reporters, the Mayor clarified that the Assembly must wait for the completion of major drainage works in the enclave before commencing structural repairs on the overhead crossings.

“We cannot begin repairs until the drainage works are completed to avoid additional costs,” he stated.

Mayor Allotey stressed that this postponement is strategic, ensuring that any refurbished infrastructure is not damaged or rendered redundant by the ongoing GARID project activities.

To mitigate immediate risks for the public, he indicated that interim safety protocols have been activated around the commercial hub.

“Traffic personnel have been deployed to assist pedestrians cross safely,” he noted.

The deteriorating state of the Kaneshie Market footbridges has long triggered intense worry among local traders and daily commuters navigating the bustling highway.

Reassuring the public, the Mayor maintained that the Assembly will move promptly to restore the footbridges as soon as the GARID contractors conclude their assignment.
