Mahama Ayariga was a terrible Majority Leader; too partisan, so his removal is not surprising — Analyst

August 11, 2026
Samuel Boateng

Political analyst Samuel Boateng has stated that Mahama Ayariga performed poorly during his tenure as Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Boateng argued that the Bawku Central MP—who has now been nominated as the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development—failed to deliver effective leadership.

He noted that a successful Majority Leader must build consensus across party lines, winning over both their own caucus and the opposition. According to Boateng, Ayariga was excessively partisan and ultimately failed to gain the opposition’s confidence.

In an interview with host Kwabena Agyapong, Boateng remarked:

“Mahama Ayariga failed to be effective and efficient as Majority Leader. He could have done better. When you are the Majority Leader, you have two core things to achieve. You should win the hearts of your caucus and the minds of the opposition. To be truthful, he has not been impressive as Majority Leader. He was too partisan as Leader of Government Business.”

Boateng further observed that Ayariga’s public commentary and conduct on the floor of the House hindered his performance. He added:

“As Leader of Government Business, you have a responsibility to hold the house together. You are to ensure that the policies and initiatives succeed in the House. However, throughout his leadership, he failed. So I think technically and strategically, he has been nominated as Local Government Minister. His removal as Majority Leader was not surprising.”

Under the proposed ministerial reshuffle, Ayariga will replace Banda MP Ahmed Ibrahim at the Local Government Ministry. Ibrahim is set to be reassigned to the Ministry of Works and Housing, taking over from Gilbert Adjei, who moves to the Ministry of Defence.

Boateng described these administrative changes as a clear wake-up call for other government appointees to refine their political strategy and parliamentary engagement.
