Agbodza Calls for Nighttime Shifts Under 24-Hour Economy Strategy for Tema Motorway

August 20, 2026
Agbodza

Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has instructed contractor Maripoma Enterprise Limited to accelerate construction on the Tema Motorway to guarantee its completion by 2027

The critical artery connects Tema Port to the rest of the country, and ongoing work has severely disrupted daily transit. While noting incremental progress, Agbodza urged the firm to adopt round-the-clock operations and shift major construction activities to nocturnal hours when traffic volumes drop.

Agbodza acknowledged the progress made on site, remarking, “It appears you have done about 10% extra work since we were here the last time.” He praised the contractor for finishing a vital bridge ahead of schedule at a active junction without safety breaches, noting, “The main bridge not far from where we are standing has also been completed without any incidents.” He added, “My fear actually has always been the risk to the public because it’s an intersection that is in use 24/7.”

This successful milestone proves the company can accelerate progress safely, according to the Minister. He pushed the firm to align its workflow with the government’s 24-hour economy strategy, arguing that night shifts would significantly lessen daily gridlock. “A project like this elsewhere will be done 24/7. There’s no reason why you cannot work even more at night than the day,” he noted.

To mitigate ongoing commuter frustration, Agbodza recommended restructuring the construction schedule to preserve daytime traffic flow. “So I’m encouraging you to take advantage of the President’s 24-hour economy to do more of the disruptive works in the night and rather scale down during the day and make certain or dedicated lanes available for the public to use during the day,” he said. Timely delivery remains essential given the strain on commuters, with Agbodza concluding, “We are hopeful that you can complete this on schedule because the motoring public can’t understand why they have to go through this for that long period.”
