The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to deploy undercover personnel to board commercial vehicles as ordinary passengers to monitor fare charges and identify drivers who impose unauthorised fares on commuters.
The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who announced the measure at a press conference on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, said the Assembly would work with relevant security agencies and other appropriate authorities to enforce approved transport fares and protect passengers from exploitation.
He said the practices were unacceptable and warned that drivers found charging unauthorised fares would be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law.
According to him, the exercise would particularly target early morning and rush-hour periods, when some commercial drivers allegedly take advantage of high passenger demand to increase fares arbitrarily.
He cited instances where commuters who would ordinarily pay about GH¢10 for a journey were allegedly being charged as much as GH¢20 stressing that the monitoring exercise would cover major transport routes and terminals serving areas including Lapaz, Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kasoa, Shiashie, Madina, Nima, Airport Residential Area, Pokuase, Nsawam and Circle, among others.
Mayor Allotey noted that the AMA would formally write to transport stations and operators to communicate the directive and remind drivers of their obligation to charge only approved fares.
He appealed to commercial drivers to consider the impact of their actions on commuters and refrain from exploiting passengers
The Mayor urged commuters who experienced arbitrary fare increases to report such incidents with car numbers to 0544 916 4628 to assist with enforcement.
He expressed the Assembly’s commitment to protecting residents and promoting fairness, discipline, and order within the city’s public transport system.
