Decisive Management actions have led to restored trust and financial stability for the NHIS – Head, Corporate Communications

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has recorded significant operational milestones under the leadership of its Governing Board and Executive Management, according to Head of Corporate Communications, Ms Faustina Derry.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio’s Frontline, Ms Derry stated that management, led by Dr Asare Bampoe, remains committed to ensuring healthcare providers across Ghana receive prompt and accurate reimbursements for services delivered to active National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) members.

Ms Derry described the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) as a pivotal decision for the scheme. She explained that the previous capping regime severely hampered operations at statutory institutions, leading to delayed claim reimbursements and a substantial backlog.

“This financial strain previously prompted some healthcare providers to threaten service suspension, whilst others imposed illicit out-of-pocket charges on patients, eroding public confidence in the scheme.

Uncapping the levy has enabled the authority to clear its claims backlog, maintain regular payments, restore public trust, and expand coverage”, she said.

NHIS active membership currently stands at 70 per cent of the Ghanaian population, with targets set to reach 80 per cent. This expansion aligns with Ghana’s drive towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under Sustainable Development Goal 3.

To combat persistent fraudulent claims and illegal billing by service providers, the NHIA has deployed targeted technological solutions.

“The authority has also directed substantial financial and human resources towards rolling out the Free Primary Health Care scheme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), both aimed at protecting vulnerable demographics.”

In August 2026, the NHIA disbursed over GH¢35 million to healthcare facilities across 107 districts participating in the initial phase of the Free Primary Health Care programme.

Furthermore, on 13 August 2026, the authority formally seconded 13 staff members to support the newly established Ghana Medical Trust Fund Secretariat.
