The Deputy National Coordinator for the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (RCOMSDEP), Hon. George Dadzie Junior, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting responsible mining that will improve the lives of Ghanaians.
Speaking on the Rainbow Radio Weekend Show, Hon. Dadzie Junior stressed that RCOMSDEP is not about conventional mining, but a well-structured responsible mining regime designed to benefit every Ghanaian, especially communities in mining areas.
According to him, what sets RCOMSDEP apart from illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—is its strict emphasis on due process, safety, and sustainability.
“We are not just doing mining. We are doing responsible mining which will better and benefit everyone. This is mining that respects the law, respects the environment, and respects the people,” he stated.
Hon. Dadzie Junior revealed that the initiative involves all relevant government agencies responsible for mining and related activities across the country. He noted that key state institutions such as the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ghana Water Company, the Minerals Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other regulatory bodies are fully engaged in implementing RCOMSDEP.
He explained that this multi-agency approach ensures transparency, accountability, and full compliance with legal and environmental requirements before, during, and after mining operations.
“We involved all the government agencies responsible when it comes to mining in the country. We mentioned GRA, Ghana Water, Minerals Commission, and others. No one is left out, because responsible mining is a collective responsibility,” he emphasized.
Addressing health and safety, the Deputy National Coordinator noted that unlike illegal miners who operate haphazardly without protective protocols, RCOMSDEP ensures proper infrastructure and safety standards at all sites.
He highlighted that the programme provides on-site clinics, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and essential safety gear to safeguard both miners and host communities.
“We do proper setup with respect to clinics, PPEs, and other needed safety equipment, unlike the illegal miners that do it anyhow. For us, the life and safety of every miner matters,” he said.
Hon. Dadzie Junior added that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, the government remains determined to transform the mining sector from a source of environmental degradation into a driving force for job creation, skills development, and national progress.
He called on Ghanaians, particularly the youth in mining communities, to embrace RCOMSDEP and support the government’s ongoing efforts to sanitize the mining sector.
