GRIDCo attributes early morning blackout to Akosombo–Volta line fault

August 20, 2026
Dumsor

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed the early morning power cuts experienced in parts of the country to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.

In an official statement released on Thursday, August 20, 2026, the power transmission company explained that the technical hitch occurred around 4:30 a.m., forcing an automatic shutdown of several power generation units across the country.

“The fault resulted in the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal generating plants as part of the system’s protection mechanisms to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System. This consequently resulted in the loss of power supply to some parts of the country,” the statement noted.

Engineers from GRIDCo, in collaboration with key power sector stakeholders, immediately moved to isolate the faulted section to avert further damage to the national grid and kick-start emergency recovery protocols.

Providing an update on ongoing recovery measures, the power distributor assured that technical crews had already restored power to several affected communities while working round the clock to reconnect the remaining off-grid areas.

“Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, and restoration efforts are progressing steadily to ensure that supply is restored to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” GRIDCo stated.

The power transmitter expressed regret over the widespread inconvenience caused to households and commercial consumers, adding that all necessary technical resources had been deployed to ensure complete system recovery.

“GRIDCo regrets the inconvenience caused by this temporary outage and assures the general public that all relevant technical teams have been fully mobilised and are working with urgency to achieve complete restoration of the power system,” the statement concluded, appealing to the public for patience and cooperation while restoration efforts continue.
