Minority Caucus demands parliamentary probe over Gold Board Losses

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has officially requested a Parliamentary Inquiry into the operations of the Ghana Gold Board following reported losses in the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

The demand comes after public comments made between 17 and 22 August 2026 by the Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, regarding the financial status of the institution.

Addressing the issue in a formal statement, Deputy Minority Leader Hon. Patricia Appiagyei clarified that the reported financial discrepancies originated from an independent review rather than political posturing.

“The losses associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme were not conjured by the Minority. They were identified in an official report by the International Monetary Fund, an independent and internationally respected institution, whose assessments are not lightly dismissed,” the statement noted.

The Minority expressed disappointment over personal comments directed at its members, including the Minority Leader, during recent responses from the GoldBod chief executive.

“In the course of responding, Mr Gyamfi has, on more than one occasion, directed personal characterisations at Members of the Minority, including the Minority Leader. We will not respond to those characterisations in kind. We state plainly, and without qualification, that the allegations are false, and we reject them entirely,” Hon. Appiagyei emphasized.

The parliamentary opposition highlighted the necessity of maintaining ethical standards in public leadership, citing Ghana’s Code of Conduct and Ethics for political appointees. The caucus affirmed its intent to utilize institutional avenues to address the conduct of the Chief Executive Officer.

Reiterating their oversight responsibility, the caucus called on GoldBod leadership to present its financial records before Parliament to reconcile the IMF figures with the board’s audited statements.

“We call on GoldBod to appear before a Parliamentary Inquiry to account fully for the losses identified in the IMF’s report and to reconcile them with its own audited financial statements, so that the public record can be settled by facts, tested under parliamentary scrutiny, rather than by accusation on either side,” the statement concluded.
