Residents and businesses in parts of the Greater Accra Region will experience an interruption in electricity supply on Sunday, August 23, 2026, to allow the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to execute critical replacement works on its infrastructure.

The 15-hour planned power outage, scheduled to run from 3:00 am to 6:00 pm, is aimed at carrying out the next phase of work on a damaged tower situated along the Ashaiman stretch of the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line.

According to the state power transmitter, the pylon suffered severe structural damage following a recent tanker explosion in the immediate vicinity.

In an official statement released in Tema, GRIDCo explained that the planned intervention is vital to safeguard the integrity of the national grid and restore full technical capacity to the affected line.

“The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) wishes to inform the public that it will carry out the next phase of work on its tower on the Ashaiman section of the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line which got damaged following a tanker explosion nearby,” the power operator stated.

The company further highlighted that its technical teams require the designated time window to carry out the sensitive maintenance operations safely.

“This phase of the work will be carried out on Sunday 23rd August, 2026 from 3am to 6pm. Our engineers and technical teams will use this period to safely undertake the remaining work to restore the integrity of the transmission line,” the statement added.

Acknowledging the operational risk and necessity of the exercise, GRIDCo indicated that the shutdown is unavoidable to safeguard both field personnel and members of the public during the heavy technical installation.

“To facilitate the replacement works and ensure the safety of personnel and the public, power supply to some locations in the Greater Accra Region will be interrupted during the period of work,” the power utility cautioned.

To mitigate the impact on affected communities and commercial establishments, GRIDCo noted that it is working in close tandem with the main electricity distributor in the southern sector.

“GRIDCo is collaborating with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to mitigate the impact of the power supply interruption on customers and communities in areas affected by the planned works,” the release noted.

Expressing regret over the disturbance to domestic and business activities across the capital, GRIDCo appealed to residents for maximum cooperation as engineers move to wrap up the restoration project.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this interruption will cause and request the patience, understanding and cooperation of the public as GRIDCo works progressively to complete this critical work,” the company concluded.
