Caterers risk contract loss over school meal delays

Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John Mburidiba has cautioned Ghana School Feeding Programme caterers that non-compliance with the five-day feeding schedule will result in contract termination.

Speaking at the Northern Regional Education Forum in Tamale—held under the theme Building Strong Partnerships: The Role of Communities in Advancing Quality Primary and Tertiary Education—the Minister noted that previous records revealed some vendors failed to provide daily meals. He clarified that catering is mandatory every school day unless an official holiday or absence is confirmed by the headteacher.

”What we heard under the previous administration was that caterers were not cooking for five days in a week. These are our own children you are feeding. Are the children transported from another region? No. Why are you under-feeding them? Why do you feed them Monday, skip Tuesday, feed them Wednesday, skip Thursday, feed them Friday? We don’t want that to repeat,” he said.

Mr. Mburidiba stated that the present administration will enforce strict oversight through the Northern Regional Director of Education, District Directors, and Circuit Supervisors, who must submit a regional compliance report within a week.

”Your office should take it up with the district offices and deploy circuit supervisors to monitor and bring the reports. By next week that report should be ready in my office. What is going on? Is this mess still happening? If yes, we will identify those caterers, get them out and replace them with the right people,” the Minister cautioned.

He reiterated that the initiative aims to support local pupils and that any deliberate shortchanging will face immediate sanctions.
