Security has been restored in New Winneba following a violent attack on Tuesday morning by a mob from neighbouring communities, which left three people dead and 15 others injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 am on September 1, 2026, when an irate group of about 300 individuals—armed with guns, cutlasses, stones, and sticks—invaded the town. The mob, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze, targeted local residents, vandalised shops, and damaged several residential properties.
Fifteen people who sustained varying degrees of injury, including a police officer, were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention. Hospital officials have confirmed that three persons died from their injuries.
Initial response teams from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and the Agona Swedru District Patrols were dispatched to the scene to quell the rioting.
To ensure stability and prevent further clashes, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has ordered a heavy deployment of reinforcement personnel to the area, supported by two armoured vehicles from the National Police Headquarters.
According to Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie of the Central Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, the police have brought the situation under control, and calmness has returned to the township.
Investigations into the motive behind the attack are underway, and the police administration has assured the public that further details will be released in due course.
