Ghana has called for expanded cooperation with China to widen access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education across all levels of learning.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu highlighted the need for stronger partnerships in STEM and emerging technologies during a working visit from the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Cong Song, on Tuesday.
Mr Iddrisu said enhanced collaboration in technical disciplines and digital skills would prove crucial in equipping young Ghanaians for a rapidly shifting global economy.
During the bilateral meeting, the minister expressed gratitude for Beijing’s ongoing support to the Ghanaian education system, noting the positive impact of Confucius Institutes established across several public universities in fostering cultural and academic exchange.
He also formally acknowledged a $30m (£23m) grant from the Chinese government designated for the construction of the University of Science and Technology in Damongo, in the Savanna Region. The upcoming institution is expected to focus heavily on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and next-generation technologies.
“Ghana looks forward to expanding this partnership beyond current projects to ensure students at every level can acquire practical STEM and digital skills,” Mr Iddrisu said, expressing optimism that Ambassador Cong’s tenure would mark a new chapter in Ghana-China relations.
In response, Ambassador Cong reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s national development agenda, promising to prioritise joint initiatives in education, scientific research, and technological development.
