The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is set to phase out traditional static billboards in favour of digital advertising boards starting in 2027 to modernise and regulate outdoor advertising across the metropolis.

Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang, disclosed the initiative during a consultative meeting with 28 registered advertisers operating within the city.

He noted that the existing billboard system has grown increasingly chaotic, characterized by ad-hoc installations of varying sizes along major arterial roads. This clutter undermines urban aesthetics and creates potential hazards for both drivers and pedestrians.

“For a city to thrive, there must be order,” he stated.

Under the forthcoming policy framework, the KMA will trim the total volume of outdoor advertising units while enforcing strict standards regarding structure size, design, and spatial distribution.

The Assembly plans to cap billboard density along designated routes and mandate precise specifications for high-profile corridors and strategic zones. Key locations affected include the Airport Roundabout, Sofoline, Ahodwo, and Bekwai Roundabout, with tailored guidelines also earmarked for the Kumasi Zoo, Kejetia, and the Central Business District.

Additionally, the Mayor declared an immediate moratorium on billboard placement along the Ahodwo-Santasi stretch until the ongoing road dualisation project reaches completion.

He cautioned that the Assembly will dismantle dilapidated structures and clear out billboards tied to unpaid municipal fees.
