The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has announced plans to provide an additional 2,000 laptops to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to expand access to digital skills training under the One Million Coders Programme.
The announcement was made during the Minister’s working visit to the university campus as part of his broader tour of the Ashanti Region to assess the implementation of the programme and identify opportunities for further expansion.
During the visit, Hon. Samuel Nartey George toured several learning centres on campus and interacted directly with students to gain first-hand insight into their experiences with the programme while encouraging broader participation across the student body.
The allocation of the additional laptops will support the establishment of 40 new learning centres across the institution, increasing the total number of campus centres from 10 to 50. KNUST initially received 500 laptops to equip its first 10 learning centres.
This operational expansion aims to bring digital skills training within easier reach of more students and prospective learners across the university community, offering increased opportunities to build competencies vital to Ghana’s evolving digital economy.
The Minister also revealed that the Ministry is actively exploring options to extend the reach of the initiative through strategic partnerships with other tertiary institutions across the Ashanti Region, including Kumasi Technical University.
The working visit forms a key component of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to monitor the progress of the One Million Coders Programme, strengthen national digital skills development, and widen access to technology-enabled learning opportunities.
Through the initiative, the sector ministry aims to equip more Ghanaians with relevant digital capabilities to foster local innovation, enhance graduate employability, and position citizens to participate meaningfully in the national digital economy.
