TraffiTech-GH is being used to extort money from drivers — NPP’s Ofori-Atta Alleges

A communications team member for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alexander Ofori-Atta, has accused the government of rushing the implementation of the TraffiTech-GH system, claiming the technology is currently being used as a revenue scheme to extort money from unsuspecting motorists.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM with host Kwabena Agyapong, Mr Ofori-Atta argued that statutory authorities should have taken adequate time to engage key stakeholders and thoroughly explain the operational guidelines to transport unions before launching the rollout.

When reminded that the original framework for TraffiTech-GH was formulated under the previous NPP administration, Mr Ofori-Atta maintained that while the policy concept was sound, the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government acted with undue haste in its execution.

He stressed that although the safety and security of road users remain paramount, the administration appeared far more interested in collecting penalties than ensuring proper public awareness.

“TraffiTech-GH is being used to extort money from drivers rather than to protect lives. The implementation has been completely rushed, and the authorities should have taken time to explain the system thoroughly to key stakeholders and transport unions before rolling it out.”

“While the safety and security of road users remain paramount, the current administration seems far more interested in collecting penalties and revenue than educating the public. Although the framework for TraffiTech-GH was formulated under our NPP administration, the NDC government has acted with undue haste in its execution.”

He subsequently urged the current government to consult officials from the previous administration to seek guidance on how the system was originally intended to be implemented seamlessly.

“We urge the government to consult officials from the previous administration and seek proper guidance on how the system was originally intended to be implemented seamlessly without burdening Ghanaian motorists.”

However, Edward Akwetey Quaye, a communications team member for the governing NDC, pushed back against allegations of bad faith while acknowledging that public education surrounding the rollout has been severely lacking.

While maintaining that the automated traffic system will significantly reduce road crashes and enforce discipline, Mr Akwetey Quaye conceded that managing public awareness properly remains the key obstacle facing the program.

Clarifying the origins of the project, Mr Akwetey Quaye noted: “I want to put it on record that the new technology implemented under President John Dramani Mahama is something he inherited. The initial concept was formulated by the NPP, and we always give credit where it is due. We thank them for this initiative, but we also appeal to Ghanaians to exercise patience. The system is a solid idea that we must all support because it will help reduce road crashes, make our highways safer, and limit excessive speeding. I urge Ghanaians not to reject it, as patience will help everyone understand how it operates.”
The NDC communicator further called on managing authorities to overhaul their public outreach strategy.

TraffiTech-GH is an automated traffic law enforcement platform developed by the Ghana Police Service through the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to detect road infractions and bolster safety. It officially went live on 1st November 2026 under Regulation 242 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519).

The technology uses fixed roadside cameras, mobile and in-vehicle units, and laser speed detectors to record violations such as speeding, running red lights, improper overtaking, driving without seatbelts, operating uninsured vehicles, and using expired licenses. Police authorities are currently focusing initial operations strictly on speeding infractions before expanding monitoring to other offenses.
