SSNIT Hotels: GPRTU declares a strike

July 15, 2024
GPRTU-Station

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has declared an immediate strike following the issues surrounding the decision by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to sell a 60% stake in four of its hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture.

Rock City has since withdrawn its interest in purchasing the hotels, following which SSNIT has also terminated the process.

However, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has maintained that it will embark on its strike until the dissolution of the board and management of SSNIT.

GPRTU, a member of the TUC, had been instructed not to embark on a strike by the TIC due to the impact it would have on Ghanaians pending the outcome of a meeting between the TUC and authorities on the matter.

However, the proposed meeting has been postponed.

National Communications team member Samuel Amoah speaking on Frontline on Rainbow 87.5FM, said we served notice that we will be on strike today, Monday, July 15, 2024, due to the controversies surrounding the hotels.

But the TUC we are part of advised that we should not strike due to the difficulty it will have on Ghanaians pending the outcome of a proposed meeting between the TUC and authorities.

However, the meeting has been postponed, and so we have agreed to strike. As I speak to you, members of the GPRTU are to stop work and be on strike. We will be on strike pending the outcome of the issues.”

He told host Kwabena Agyapong that members of GPRTU are informal sector contributors to SSNIT and want their contributions protected so they will not go through hardship after retirement.

“We were working, but as I speak to you now, we are on strike. We’ve parked our cars and are on strike. This is a critical issue. The majority of our drivers are contributors, thus we have an interest in the outcome. We cannot allow this to occur. As members of the TUC, we endorse its decision to go on strike and urge that the right thing be done. “We will continue to strike until our expectations are met,” he continued.
