The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a strong-worded statement slamming MultiChoice, operator of DSTV, for denying reaching an agreement to reduce its price package.
He warned that authorities will shut down DStv’s operations in the country as early as tomorrow if the company does not reconsider its stance on price reductions.
Mr Nartey George accused MultiChoice of “disrespecting Ghanaians” and changing its position after previously agreeing to engage in discussions about lowering prices.
The statement he posted on his Facebook page about the minister was a direct response to MultiChoice’s recent clarification that it had not agreed to a price reduction but was only prepared to participate in a committee meeting.
“Let me be clear, I have no intention to continue tolerating the disrespect to Ghanaians by DStv,” Minister George stated.
He was emphatic that the government had previously held off on regulatory action at the request of MultiChoice, who had expressed a willingness to negotiate.
However, he now believes the company has backtracked on this.
“If they have changed their position, then we simply would enforce the regulatory action,” he warned.
He further announced that the National Communications Authority (NCA) has been tasked with carrying out the enforcement, which could result in a temporary or permanent shutdown of DStv services.
“No company is above the law. When MultiChoice is ready to discuss price reduction, they can come to the negotiation table. Until then, there is nothing for us to meet over,” he said. The minister concluded with a clear message: “Ghana is open for businesses that respect our laws and institutions.”
