The Suhum Ayekotse Traditional Authority on Wednesday visited Parliament to observe proceedings and engage their Member of Parliament, Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, on the development of the Suhum Constituency.

The delegation, led by the Suhum Ayekotse Hene, Barimah Dr. Ayekotse Teinor II, said the visit was to understand the work of Parliament and explore ways to collaborate with their MP to advance the constituency.

Speaking to journalists after an orientation in Parliament, Barimah Dr. Ayekotse Teinor II said the experience was enlightening. “We are very happy to see how Parliament conducts its business.

Through the orientation we received, we have learned many things which we will share with our people when we return to Suhum Ayekotse,” he stated.

He clarified misconceptions about the role of MPs, noting that lawmakers do not directly construct roads, schools, or other infrastructure.

“We have now been educated that MPs don’t build roads or school buildings. MPs are in Parliament to make laws for the nation,” he said.

Barimah Dr. Ayekotse Teinor II urged Ghanaians to stop pressuring MPs for infrastructure projects, explaining that government allocations for development go directly to the various Assemblies.

“When parliamentary aspirants promise to construct roads, markets, or schools during campaigns, people should know that is not the work of legislators but the duty of the Assemblies,” he added.

The chief commended Hon. Asiedu Bekoe for his work despite spending nearly a year in court after his election was challenged.

“Our MP stayed home for one year after the elections because of court issues. But with just a few months in Parliament, he has done a lot and everyone in Suhum is happy with his performance,” he said.

He cited several initiatives the MP is championing, including health projects.

“The MP prioritizes the health of his people. He regularly organizes health screenings and public education. He has also done a lot for the Suhum Government Hospital, lobbied for youth employment, and educated the community on drug abuse,” Barimah Dr. Ayekotse Teinor II noted.

“We are happy and satisfied with his performance and know he will do more for us,” he concluded.

The Queen Mother of Suhum Ayekotse Traditional Authority, Dr. Nana Ayeko, also praised the MP for his support to constituents. She identified education as a major challenge in the area but said she was encouraged after discussions with Hon. Asiedu Bekoe.

“Education is one of our challenges in the constituency and we are happy to know that it is part of the plans of our Member of Parliament to address it,” she said.

Dr. Nana Ayeko advised parents in Suhum to invest in their children’s education and work to prevent school dropouts.
