Firefighter injured but fatalities averted in massive Accra Police Barracks blaze

A massive fire tore through the Accra Central Police Barracks Annex last night, destroying dozens of rooms and injuring a firefighter before crew members brought the flames under control.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to a distress call at 8:05 p.m. reporting a heavy outbreak at the Accra Water Works area, located directly opposite the Accra Central Police Station.

A first crew from the Accra City Fire Station arrived on the scene within two minutes to find the fire already fully developed.

Given the intensity of the inferno, reinforcements were quickly mobilized from multiple regional stations—including the Ministries, Parliament, Industrial Area, and Circle Fire Stations—alongside a water tanker provided by the local Assembly.

Firefighters managed to confine the blaze by 10:29 p.m. and brought it under control just before midnight. The fire was completely extinguished at 3:41 a.m.

While no fatalities were reported, one firefighter sustained critical injuries during the grueling operation. He was rushed to the nearby Police Hospital, where medical staff confirm he is now in stable condition and responding well to treatment.

The structural toll of the incident is severe. The fire gutted 32 rooms and their contents within the barracks annex, alongside an adjacent one-storey building.

However, officials noted that the swift tactical response prevented the flames from spreading to the neighboring Ghana Water Limited facility and other close-at-hand structures, preventing an even larger disaster.

Investigators are currently on-site working to determine the cause of the outbreak.
