The Ghana Prisons Service has officially interdicted Chief Officer Michael Osei-Bonsu following his arrest for attempting to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Kete-Krachi Local Prison.

The incident unfolded on Friday, June 19, 2026, during routine security screenings conducted before the officer was scheduled to begin his night shift.

According to prison authorities, the suspected narcotics were detected and confiscated directly at the prison gate due to the vigilance of the on-duty security personnel.

Following the discovery, Osei-Bonsu was immediately transferred to the Kete-Krachi District Police for further investigation.

He has since been arraigned before the Kete-Krachi District Magistrate Court and remanded into custody for two weeks, with the case officially adjourned until July 8, 2026.

In an official press release, the Public Affairs Directorate stated that “the officer has been interdicted pending the outcome of both the criminal proceedings and internal disciplinary processes,” in strict accordance with service regulations.

The Ghana Prisons Service commended the alertness of the staff involved and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining secure facilities, stating it “maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offences and other contrabands including mobile phones”.

Management emphasized that the service will continue to collaborate closely with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that anyone engaging in criminal activities is dealt with strictly under the law.
