The Ministry of Health has launched a strategic partnership with the Noor Dubai Foundation to accelerate Ghana’s fight against onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness.
The collaboration arrives at a critical juncture, providing vital resources to sustain the nation’s elimination efforts amidst tightening global funding constraints.

During a high-level meeting, the Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, met with Dr Manal Taryam, CEO of the Noor Dubai Foundation, to finalise the details of the intervention.
Dr Taryam revealed that the foundation—a member of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives—is expanding its scope in Ghana with the personal backing of the Ruler of Dubai.

While the foundation has operated in Ghana since 2009, historically focusing on delivering up to 5,000 cataract surgeries annually in Tamale, this new directive marks a major expansion into tackling neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).
Minister Akandoh directed technical teams to fast-track all administrative and operational processes, stressing that timelines must be strictly respected to meet national targets.

“Eliminating operational delays and strengthening coordination will be essential to achieving full coverage,” Akandoh stated.
The Minister expressed strong confidence that Ghana’s proven track record in managing NTDs, combined with robust international cooperation, ensures the country remains on course to completely eliminate onchocerciasis by 2030.
