Torrential rains and severe flooding across the Greater Accra Region have forced an emergency, temporary shutdown of the Mallam and Achimota primary substations.

In a joint statement released today, the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) explained that the drastic measure was taken to protect both infrastructure and human lives as water levels engulfed critical utility installations.

“The precautionary shutdown became necessary because the flooding has affected critical power infrastructure at a number of substations, posing significant risks to both electrical equipment and operational personnel,” the utility companies stated. They noted that power will remain disconnected “until conditions are safe for restoration.”

With rains continuing to fall, officials warned that further rolling blackouts may be necessary in other heavily impacted areas to prevent severe network damage.

Technical teams are currently on the ground monitoring the situation and assessing the integrity of the transmission and distribution grid.

Authorities are urging residents to exercise extreme caution when navigating flooded areas and to stay clear of electrical infrastructure.

“Members of the public are urged to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any fallen electricity poles, exposed or fallen power lines, flooded electrical installations, or any other electricity-related hazards,” the companies advised, urging the public to contact the nearest ECG office or use official customer service channels.

GRIDCo and ECG apologized for the widespread disruption, assuring the public that electricity will be restored as soon as weather conditions improve and safety can be guaranteed.
