President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Dr Pamela Graham as Ghana’s first female Auditor General during a ceremony at the Jubilee House on Thursday, 2 July 2026. She succeeds Mr Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu.
President Mahama noted that her appointment comes amid unprecedented public demands for institutional transparency.
In a developing economy like Ghana’s, he explained, the Auditor General plays a critical role in ensuring public investments yield measurable benefits for citizens.
Expressing absolute confidence in Dr Graham’s extensive experience and competence, the President emphasised the institutional independence required to maintain public trust, urging her to rely strictly on facts, evidence and the law.
“As you assume office today, you do so not in service to any government, political party or individual, but in service to the Constitution and the people of Ghana,” he stated.
President Mahama also thanked the outgoing Auditor General for his service and contributions to public accountability.
Connecting rigorous auditing to national development, the President highlighted that managing public resources prudently is vital for macroeconomic stability, revenue mobilisation, infrastructure growth, export promotion, and the 24-Hour Economy policy.
He warned public officials that oversight is mandatory, rather than discretionary.
“Every Ministry, Department and Agency, every Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly, every state-owned enterprise and every public official must recognise that accountability is not optional; it is a constitutional obligation,” he said.
To support this mission, the President promised state investment in the Ghana Audit Service’s technology, digital infrastructure, staff development, and institutional reforms.
He urged public bodies to cooperate fully and act swiftly on audit recommendations, stating that reports should actively eliminate waste and improve governance instead of serving as mere paperwork.
Speaking directly to Dr Graham, he challenged her to lead with courage, fairness, and humility to safeguard the taxpayer and protect the nation’s democratic foundation.
“You inherit an institution whose credibility has been built over decades through professionalism and fidelity to the Constitution. Your duty is to preserve, strengthen and modernise that legacy,” he said.
