An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced prominent TikToker Camilla Alhassan to one year in prison for publishing false news and engaging in offensive conduct.
The sentence was handed down on Thursday, 16 July 2026, after Alhassan pleaded guilty to the charges brought against her.
Her conviction follows the publication of widely circulated videos on her social media platform, in which she falsely claimed—without any evidence—that President John Dramani Mahama had buried 32 cows as part of spiritual rituals to secure victory in the 2024 general election.
During the proceedings, the court convicted her on the count of offensive conduct and imposed a immediate one-year custodial sentence.
Speaking to the press after the ruling, her defence counsel, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, explained that the court had struck out an additional charge of electronic abuse.
The court held that it lacked the legal jurisdiction to determine that specific offence.
Mr Bonsu further revealed that while the defence team had appealed passionately for a lighter, non-custodial punishment, the presiding judge declined the request.
The court emphasized that the rapid rise in social media-driven offences required a firm, deterrent sentence to discourage others from engaging in similar unlawful behaviour.
The court had ordered a pregnancy test for the accused prior to delivering the final sentence.
