National Standardised Test aimed at boosting learning outcomes, not failing pupils – Dr Clement Apaak

The Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Apaak, has assured pupils, parents, and teachers across the country that the National Standardised Test (NST) is strictly designed to identify learning gaps and elevate the quality of teaching, rather than serve as an academic barrier to determine whether pupils pass or fail.

Dr Apaak gave the assurance during an extensive monitoring visit to selected basic schools in the Central Region, where he interacted with key stakeholders and observed the administration of the assessment.

Addressing Primary Four pupils shortly before they sat for the examination, the Deputy Minister explained that the primary objective of the assessment is to gather vital data.

This data, he noted, will assist the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and classroom teachers in identifying specific learners who require additional academic support to thrive.

He emphasised that pupils who encounter difficulties during the assessment will not be made to repeat their class. Instead, the Ministry and its partners will implement targeted educational interventions and tailored remedial lessons to address their specific learning needs.

The Deputy Minister urged the young learners to remain calm, avoid anxiety, and approach the examination with full confidence.

He assured them that the insights gained from the evaluation exercise would ultimately lead to an improved and more supportive learning environment for every child.

Jointly administered by the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), the National Standardised Test assesses foundational literacy and numeracy skills among young learners at the Kindergarten 2, Primary 2, Primary 4, and Primary 6 levels nationwide.
