The prosecution of former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Chief Executive Officer, Solomon Asamoah, and former Board Chairman, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, encountered a fresh setback on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, after both accused failed to open their defence.
Despite a High Court directive ordering them to submit their witness statements by Tuesday, legal counsel for the duo revealed in court that they have filed an application for a stay of proceedings to suspend the trial.
This latest action follows the court’s recent dismissal of the defendants’ submission of no case.
The trial judge ruled that the State had established a prima facie case, requiring both men to take the stand and present their explanation.
Mr Asamoah and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi are standing trial over an alleged controversial $2 million payment tied to the aborted Accra Sky Train project.
They face charges of conspiracy, willfully causing financial loss to the Republic, and intentionally dissipating public funds.
State prosecutors maintain that the $2 million sum was disbursed in 2019 to Ai SkyTrain Consortium Holdings for shares without mandatory approval from the GIIF governing board, for a project that ultimately failed to materialise. Both defendants have denied the charges.
The court is scheduled to hear arguments on the stay of proceedings to determine whether the trial will be paused before the defence stage resumes.
