The Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched a full-scale investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a special needs student at Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School by two security guards attached to the institution.
According to preliminary findings released by the Service, the victim, who is currently on regular medication, suffered a health relapse on the day of the incident and required urgent medical attention. The two watchmen allegedly took advantage of her vulnerable condition to commit the assault during that period.
Following the report, law enforcement officers swiftly moved in to detain the two suspects. The management of the Service has also immediately interdicted both individuals pending the outcome of the police enquiry.
In an official statement signed by the Head of Public Relations at the GES, Daniel Fenyi, the Service confirmed that the suspects were promptly handed over to the police to face criminal proceedings.
“As an initial step, the two watchmen were arrested and handed over to the Police for further investigation. In addition, Management has interdicted them with immediate effect,” Fenyi stated.
The GES condemned the act and warned that any staff member who compromises the security of pupils will face severe legal and administrative consequences under the service’s code of conduct and the laws of Ghana.
“Thorough investigations into the matter are currently ongoing. Based on the outcome of the investigations, Management will apply the appropriate sanctions in accordance with the GES Code of Conduct and the laws of Ghana. Management cautions all staff of the Service to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and to protect the safety, dignity and wellbeing of every student,” the statement added.
The Service further assured parents, guardians, and the public that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misconduct that jeopardises student safety, promising that the case is being handled with the utmost seriousness.
