Gov’t rejects MTN’s GH₵20m donation for xenophobia victims

August 26, 2026
ABLAKWA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally turned down an offer by telecommunications giant MTN Ghana to donate GH₵20 million toward the evacuation and support of Ghanaian victims affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The decision follows media reports linking the proposed package to recent public statements attributed to the Chairman of the MTN Board, Dr. Ishmael Yamson.

In an official statement issued in Accra, the Ministry commended the company for the gesture but explained that the Mahama administration had already made full financial provision for the ongoing airlift and local reintegration of affected citizens.

According to the Ministry, the government’s stance was directly communicated to MTN’s leadership, including its Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer, during a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on August 14, 2026.

The statement reaffirmed government’s commitment to ensuring the safe return and welfare of every affected national. It added that a detailed expenditure report on the entire evacuation process will be published at the conclusion of the exercise to guarantee public transparency and accountability.

The Ministry assured investors that the state remains dedicated to maintaining an enabling commercial environment for international firms operating in the country.
