An Assin Fosu District Court has remanded a 37-year-old traditional herbalist into police custody for two weeks over allegations of stealing a Hyundai Atos taxi cab.

The suspect, Enock Antwi, also known as Nana Kakali, was charged with stealing after allegedly absconding with the vehicle belonging to a commercial driver at Assin Manso in the Central Region.

Prosecuting officer Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo informed the court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, that the complainant, Benjamin Akyerefi Baidoo, first met the suspect on 1 July 2026.

Nana Kakali had visited the area to purchase a dove for spiritual purposes, during which he offered to solve the victim’s spiritual problems.

The court heard that on 17 July 2026, the suspect visited the victim’s residence to prepare a spiritual bath. Later that evening, the victim asked Nana Kakali to accompany him in his taxi, registered GT 6165-21, to deliver items to his sister.

When the vehicle got stuck along the route, the victim walked to his sister’s house, leaving the suspect behind. Upon his return, both the taxi and the herbalist had vanished, and the suspect’s telephone number was rendered unreachable.

Following a formal report on 12 August 2026, the Cybercrime Unit of the Central North Regional Police Command tracked call records via a court order to MTN Ghana. The intelligence led to the arrest of the suspect at his hideout in Agona Swedru on 23 August 2026.

Police investigations revealed that the suspect sold the stolen taxi to scrap dealers for GH¢7,000, receiving an initial payment of GH¢2,500. He subsequently led officers to Suhum, where the vehicle was recovered.

Speaking in an interview with Rainbow Radio’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, the suspect pleaded for leniency, describing his actions as a mistake. Meanwhile, the victim commended the Cybercrime Unit for their swift action in apprehending the suspect and retrieving his vehicle.

The court granted the prosecution’s application for custodial remand to allow officers to conclude investigations.

The suspect will reappear in court on 8 September 2026.
