The government has reiterated its commitment to deepening the involvement of indigenous businesses within the country’s mining value chain, framing local enterprise participation as vital for sustained job creation and long-term economic growth.
Addressing delegates at the 3rd Gold Fields Ghana Suppliers Conference held in Tarkwa, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Emmanuel Kwamena Anyimah, highlighted that the nation’s mining sector is currently undergoing a deliberate and far-reaching transformation.
According to Mr Anyimah, the state is moving beyond traditional metrics to ensure Ghanaian firms gain a larger footprint in mine operations. He stressed that the Minerals Commission’s stance remains firm: local content evaluation is shifting away from simple trading figures toward value addition, manufacturing linkages and skills transfer.
The initiative forms part of a broader policy direction championed by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, which targets a transition from raw material exports to full domestic value addition by 2030.
Outlining the ongoing legislative reforms designed to cement these objectives, Mr Anyimah revealed:
“Cabinet has endorsed a comprehensive overhaul of the Minerals and Mining Act 2006, Act 703 — the first in 20 years. The bill now before Parliament gives local content requirements, in-country spend and the participation of women-owned businesses more than ESG compliance.”
He noted that when local enterprises handle fabrication or technical servicing directly for mining operations, it helps build a resilient economy capable of thriving long after mineral deposits are depleted.
In a direct charge to delegates, the Minerals Commission Deputy CEO urged suppliers to step up their investments in domestic manufacturing and assembly, adhere strictly to international ESG and safety standards, and forge direct linkages with local community cooperatives.
“Do not treat this conference as an occasion to renew contracts alone. Use it to build partnerships,” he charged.
