I don’t have an insight on the $10,000 funding for the Athletes Commission-Mark Aggrey

January 17, 2022

President for Ghana Golf Association(GGC) Mr. Mark Aggrey and also a board member for Ghana Olympic Committee(GOC) has said he has no insight into the disbursement of an amount of $10,000 which was meant for the establishment of an Athletes Commission (AC).

He was responding to a question about why they failed to apply for the fund which was set aside to establish the athletes’ commission.

He told the host Worlanyo Wallace that he had little insight about the money to fund the athletes’ commission.

Ghana has missed out on funding from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the establishment of an Athletes Commission (AC).

The funding was released to 70 National Olympic Committees (NOC) that applied for funding to help them establish the Commission.

However, Ghana failed to put in an application since the country does not have one.

Funding was from the IOC’s Olympic Solidarity NOC Athlete Commission activity grant and would be used to set up Commissions in NOCs that do not have one.

The various NOCs were urged to apply for the funding to help “strengthen athlete representation” across the Olympic Movement.

“This grant is a result of a recommendation from the International Athletes’ Forum held in 2019, set to further strengthen the athlete voice in the Olympic Movement, which was accepted and implemented by the IOC,” the IOC said.

But Mr. Mark Aggrey explained that he had no insight into the funding opportunity.

70 National Olympic Committee applied for the fund except for Ghana because the country did not have one.

He said the Ghana Olympic Committee(GOC) asked for accountability of the previous monies they spent at the All African Games in Morocco 2019 before any other funds will be released to them.

According to him, his understanding was that before any more is released to any country, you would have to account for the previous one you were given.

He said we have instances in the past where monies were supposed to be disbursed to the various federations but the previous ones they were given needed to be accounted for.

“That is what I know. I don’t the reason why it is being held back. I cannot speak to it further. This is my understanding.”

He noted that every sports administration has challenges and these challenges must be addressed to ensure the vision and aspirations of sports persons would be met.

He concluded that every sport has its own challenges but he was hoping this year will be a great year.
