Ghanaian priest and politician Christian Kwabena Andrews, also known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, believes President Akufo-Addo’s approach to combating galamsey is a farce.
He posited that, despite the president’s claims of fighting galamsey, some of his appointees and party members are actively engaged in galamsey.
He stated that the government cannot claim to be fighting galamsey without providing alternative employment for those affected.
For him, it would be best to train small-scale miners, license their operations, and grant them operating permits.
He stated on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that our water bodies are being destroyed. What are we doing about it? We cannot ask illegal miners to stop mining when we have not provided them with an alternative. The current approach is a farce, and we will not be able to solve the problem until we do what is right.”
As a result, he has promised to license the illegal miners, train them, and allow them to operate.
He also suggested encouraging illegal miners to go into farming as part of efforts to reclaim and restore the destroyed lands.
He emphasized that we cannot stop mining, but we must mine in acceptable ways and practices. Mining could help us mine our natural resources, add value to them, and generate resources to help Ghana develop.
