Ranking Member of Parliament’s Sports Committee, Koberna Mensah Woyome, has called for an investigation into Ghana’s wheelchair tennis team’s participation in the recent African games in Nigeria.
The lawmaker stated that the team was not treated with dignity and respect and that it was up to parliament to investigate the matter.
The team was robbed in Nigeria on their way home from the tournament.
They took the bus to and from the tournament.
It was also revealed that each of the seven Ghanaian players was given only Ghc100 as a stipend for their seven-day stay in Nigeria.
Speaking to Rainbow Radio’s Parliamentary Correspondent Philomina Kuntu Blankson, the MP noted that the experience the Wheelchair team went through was terrible and should never have happened.
He has also revealed the committee will host the team and examine the issues raised.
He has further demanded that the team must be compensated for what they had gone through.
”It is just unfortunate that the team went through this ordeal. It was not only terrible but unpardonable. I think there is the need for an investigation into this matter because we cannot put the lives of our precious ones at risk.”
“There is a rumour that they were paid Ghc100 for their participation in the games. I’ll request an investigation into this matter. I’ll contact the Minister to find out what happened and whether he is aware of it.”
