Renowned sports broadcaster and President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, has declared that he will run for Vice President of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA).
He was elected as the GAA’s second vice president at their Annual General Meeting (AGM) in 2021.
After completing his term, the broadcaster known as ‘The Barrister’ confirmed to Rainbow Sports that he would run for vice president in the next election.
Mr. Assibey stated that, while he does not wish to gloat about his accomplishments, he has served the Association effectively, and the members believe he is qualified to serve as vice president.
“The members evaluated my performance and contributions and concluded that I could make significant contributions.” People are unaware that I have always been with the athletic association. I was involved in athletics before entering basketball, arm wrestling, football, weightlifting, and other sports. So the athletic family is aware of my contributions, and this is not a new phenomenon. They are well aware of my abilities. They believe that what I am doing and what I have done can influence the development and promotion of athletics, which is why they have considered me to run for and be elected vice president.”
As previously said, I have no intention of blowing my own horn, but I can state unequivocally that they are aware of my contributions to athletics. They are aware of my progress and successes. I am optimistic that I will be named vice president at the elections.”
Athletics is currently No. 1.
Meanwhile, Mr. Assibey has challenged individuals who have alleged that athletics is underperforming to present facts and data to back up their claims.
He strongly disagreed, declaring unequivocally that athletics is currently the number one sporting discipline that has made Ghana proud when compared to other sporting disciplines.
The only issue he mentioned was a lack of adequate funding, despite the efforts of stakeholders in the field.
“We’ve made progress. I challenge anyone who says athletics is declining to give proof to back up their claims. Such remarks are categorically wrong and should be ignored. When you look at the job our men and women are doing, you will agree with me that athletics is the number one sporting discipline. Several Ghanaian athletes are competing in the world arena. What we need is adequate funding, and we will perform significantly better than we do now. There is no sporting discipline that has carried the flag of Ghana higher than athletics in the last ten years, and I am willing to defend this at any time.”
