Former President John Dramani Mahama, the Natipnal Democratic Congress’ presidential candidate, has announced that his new administration will reopen investigations into the scandal involving former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.
The former president stated this in a post on his official X page.
Mr. Mahama’s post is based on the Attorney General’s comments on the matter.
The Attorney General has urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to halt investigations into alleged money laundering allegations against former Sanitation Minister, Madam Cecilia Dapaah.
The Attorney General has urged EOCO to halt investigations requested by the Special Prosecutor’s Office (OSP) due to their lack of basis.
The Attorney General’s office discovered that the OSP failed to submit a joint investigation report to EOCO and has not responded to their request for its findings.
According to the Attorney General’s office, the docket presented to EOCO only includes the OSP’s letter transmitting the docket, the diary of action, statements recorded during the investigation, and letters written by the OSP to other institutions like the CID and banks during the inquiry.
The Attorney General’s office’s analysis of the docket revealed that the OSP did not find any corruption or corruption-related offences against Cecilia Dapaah.
However, the Attorney General’s office believes that the key to a money laundering charge is gains obtained from criminal proceeds resulting from illegal activity.
The Attorney General’s office concludes that without any criminal issues associated with the properties of the former minister, there is no basis for a money laundering investigation.
But reacting, Mr Mahama said: “My government will reopen investigations into alleged acts of corruption and graft in the Cecelia Dapaah case.”
