Economy in a mess, but leadership not holding Akufo-Addo to account like we did to Mahama – PRO, Spare Parts dealers

The Public Relations Officer of the Abbosey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association and the Ghana Union of Traders (GUTA) has taken leadership of the group to the cleaners, accusing them of being partisan and soft on the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr. Kwadwo Tachie says the leadership has failed to call out the government over the current state of the economy and the depreciation of the cedi, which is affecting their operations.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said if it were the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in power, the leadership would have mobilised them to shut down their shops and embark on demonstrations, all in the name of expressing their worry over the economic crisis.

He lamented to host Kwabena Agyapong that “we have failed and are pretending that the country is heading in the right direction when, in actuality, we are in a dire economic crisis”.

The cedi depreciation he stressed has affected their operations, and they have decided to increase the cost of spare parts.

Currently, the Finance Ministry is holding a meeting with business groups, including spare parts dealers.

But Mr. Tachie believes the meeting is unnecessary, and leadership should have boycotted it.

“I am outraged. I am furious and do not understand why our leadership will honour this meeting. They should have boycotted the meeting because it was unnecessary. The situation has worsened. We should be on the streets by now. In 2015, we slammed the previous government and demanded better leadership. If not for hypocrisy, why should our leadership honour a meeting when we never offered the previous government the same opportunity?

We did not give the previous NDC government breathing space. We are facing a very terrible economic crisis, and yet, our leaders have failed to mobilise to take action. We should be on the streets now. We should have members shut down their stores. I don’t understand why we have treated this government with kid gloves when that was not what we did previously.”

He also slammed the media, accusing them of failing to hold the government to account.

He said the media held the NDC government to account and reported several stories, but that is not what we are witnessing.

“When the NPP is in power, they don’t get the same treatment the NDC gets. The majority of our leaders don’t hold the NPP to account like they do with the NDC. Are they not human beings? We should be seen to be bold, hold every government to account, and demand better leadership. The truth of the matter is that our leadership is partisan.

The cedi has depreciated beyond unimaginable levels, and yet we have kept quiet. I am extremely angry over this and do not want to explain why this is happening. They will hear from us on Sunday. Some of us will no longer allow this to happen. We will speak up and demand better.”
