Clement Wilkinson, the Municipal Chief Executive MCE for Ga West Assembly, has expressed concern about some chiefs engaging the double sale of land in the mountainous areas.
The situation he lamented could trigger a serious crisis for the area.
The MCE stated that if precautions were not taken, the area may be plagued by land disputes and threats from landguardism, as we have seen in Kasoa over the years.
He couldn’t understand why landgaurds wielded so much power and tormented people over their properties.
He said some of chiefs are selling lands within mountainous areas in Ga West, a situation he noted could cause avoidable disasters.
“We recently organised an operation there, and the situation is not ideal. If we don’t take precautions, we could face major crises like those we saw in Kasoa. I will ask the chiefs to avoid selling land in the municipality. There is a purpose why God made these mountains, and yet a chief is claiming them.
That is why I have taken the matter to court. I don’t care if a chief claims the territories in the mountains. The situation has reached a point where these mountains may fall.
“The area floods when it rains, and if we don’t stop it now, it will be like Kasoa. Currently, when it rains, Hebron floods with water and sand due to this. If you are a chief and this is happening; some have even made claims that the land guards are the ones selling the lands. But the question to ask is: What power do these landgaurds wield to sell these lands? At the end of the day, the chiefs are the ones who will work on the documentation for those who bought the lands, and so they cannot deny they know so much about this,” he said in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
The Ga West Municipal Assembly was formed from the former Ga Municipality, which was established in 1988 as part of government decentralisation and local government reform plans.
In 2004, the Ga Municipality was divided into two, with Amasaman headquarters serving as the headquarters for the newly formed Ga West municipality.
It borders Ga East Municipal and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to the east, Akwapim South District to the north, and Ga South Municipal and Ga Central Municipal to the south.
