The People’s National Party (PNP) has launched an operation kick the Ghana Union of Traders (GUTA) out of the retail market.
The political party, in a statement, accused GUTA and its members of overpricing commodities.
The party accused GUTA of taking advantage of the depreciation of the cedi, the inflation rate, and taxes by selling their commodities at outrageous prices.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the chairman revealed that she had gone to purchase a product in one of the GUTA shops, and the price was Ghc 175; however, when she went to Makola and China Mall to ask of the Royce for the same product, she was told the price was Ghc 175 and Ghc 68, respectively.
The statement issued by the National Chairman, Madam Janet Asana Nabla said “It is time for Ghanaians to take a stand and kick GUTA out of our markets. GUTA and its members have been abusing the free market economy to increase prices, contributing
significantly to the inflation we are now experiencing in Ghana. For example, a chair that costs GHC 68 at China Mall is sold for about GHC 175 by GUTA members. This price inflation is a clear indication of their exploitative practices.
Furthernmore, GUTA’s anger towards the Ministry of Agriculture for selling foodstuffs at lower prices while its members continue to inflate prices to unbearable levels for Ghanaians is unacceptable. GUTA’s actions are eroding the purchasing power of Ghanaians, and it is clear that the union was formed with the intent to destroy this purchasing power. Therefore, it is imperative that we dissolve the union.
