The Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana (CFAG) has criticised the Judiciary, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), and other anti-corruption institutions for remaining indifferent while politicians steal and sell state assets to themselves.
The group says if Ghana were a serious democracy, the judiciary and other anti-corruption agencies would not sit unconcerned and watch these politicians destroy this country.
Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu, President, Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana, said our political class came into office to steal from us, destroy our state assets, and turn around to sell them to themselves.
He noted that it was time for the army, police, judiciary, and all other concerned Ghanaians to rise and defend the country from these “thieves.”
“People are stealing from the state. They are destroying our water bodies through illegal mining activities. If we have judges in this country and the police, and our system truly works, then why are our judges, police, military, and whatever else being so blind, quiet, and dumb and watching these people destroy this country? These people are destroying this country. They are destroying our water bodies. Where is the future of this country? The future is today. That is why we are up and protesting this. When you travel to Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and other countries, that is not what is happening there. But in Ghana, when our politicians get into office, they steal from us and amass wealth for themselves. They abuse their office with impunity. This is not something that will help the country. If we don’t rise and defend this country, then the next generation will have nothing to live for.”
He also served notice that the association will soon launch a campaign that will ensure that all sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) who illegally acquired state assets lose their seats.
The group wants such persons to immediately return the assets they have bought or face its wrath.
“The illegal acquisition of state properties is a betrayal of the public trust and a violation of the principles of good governance,” he said in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
He called on the government to take immediate action to recover all illegally acquired state properties. Individuals in possession of state properties to voluntarily return them before the 2024 elections.
He also advised the the Electoral Commission to disqualify any candidate found to have illegally acquired state properties adding that failure to comply will lead to mass protests and farmer-led demonstrations across the country.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that the Association is currently conducting an investigation to identify all politicians who have illegally acquired state assets and will publish their names so Ghanaians will vote against them.
“We cannot allow thieves to contest our elections and expect to be elected to go and represent us in parliament. We also call on the Electoral Commission to disqualify any politician who has illegally acquired state assets from contesting the elections. If the EC fails to do that, we drag those persons to court to place an injunction on them. You don’t deserve to go to Paris. As someone who has illegally acquired state properties, you don’t deserve to go to parliament because if we elect you to go to parliament, you will sell the whole country.”
Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu said we were once told by PC Appiah Ofori that our MPs accepted bribes and approved the sale of Ghana Telecom and so this is something our leaders do. This is not how this country should be managed. Most of our state farms and state lands have all been sold to real estate developers. That is why we have taken this step to protest.
