An onion-laden KIA Rhino truck has overturned whilst descending the Kwahu Mountain towards Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region, leaving the vital stretch blocked and causing severe vehicular traffic.
The incident happened on Saturday when the vehicle, which was travelling from the northern part of Ghana, lost control while navigating the steep, winding descent of the Kwahu scarp.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the truck tilted and fell onto its side, spilling hundreds of bags of onions across the asphalt and severely obstructing both lanes.
Although no casualties have been confirmed, the overturned truck has brought traffic flow to a near standstill. Motorists travelling between Kwahu and Nkawkaw are experiencing significant delays, with drivers forced to move at a snail’s pace and exercise extreme caution.
Officers from the Ghana Police Service Motor Traffic and Transport Department, alongside local youths, were deployed to the area to help manage the traffic build-up and clear the spilled cargo off the carriageway.
The dangerous Kwahu Mountain-Nkawkaw road remains a notorious spot for frequent vehicular accidents, particularly involving heavy-duty trucks suffering brake failures on the steep grade. Emergency services continue to work towards reopening the road fully.
