Ghanaians punished us in the elections because we ignored the economic issues—NPP MP

December 16, 2024
subin

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Subin in the Ashanti region, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has asserted that the New Patriotic Party’s loss in the 2024 election was precipitated by their failure to address the concerns of Ghanaians in a fair and transparent manner.

According to him, this was particularly evident in the last quarter of 2022, when calls for the dismissal of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta over the mismanagement of the economy reached a fever pitch.

Eugene Boakye Antwi further emphasised that the outcome of the 2024 election served as a vindication of his stance, as Ghanaians cast their votes based on the current state of the economy and inflation rate. In his opinion, no political party can emerge victorious in Ghana’s elections without a strong economic foundation.

The MP expressed these sentiments in an interview with Rainbow Radio’s Parliamentary Correspondent Bohyeba K Afriyie, underscoring the fact that Ghanaians punished the NPP government for disregarding their plight.

He further indicated that he feels vindicated following the outcome of the elections.

He stated that those who have difficulty in accepting his position are not a problem because he swore an oath, and his fidelity is to the constitution of Ghana and not to a political party.

He argued that once you get to parliament, the focus should be to serve Ghana because without Ghana, there would be no NPP and NDC.

‘’I come here to do what is right for the people of Ghana. I have served over five decades of my life in this country. I believe that we’ve seen the worst, and we don’t want the worst to happen,’’ he added.

To him, the NPP was not being fair to the issues because you cannot win an election in this country without the economy.

‘’If you want to win an election in this country, you need to make sure that the economy is on a sound footing. We failed to do that, and we’ve been punished because of that.”
