The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has disclosed that the shops at the Techiman Market were totally destroyed before they got to the scene.
The service also revealed that the call for their intervention was placed early.
Regional Fire Commander Bono East, ACF02 Naomi Adubea Sarpong, told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM that the fire has been brought under control.
But they affirmed that if they had received the emergency on time, they would have managed to prevent the fire from destroying the number of the shops involved.
“The outbreak is true. We received a notice or a report from an individual at 9:59 pm that the Techiman Market was on fire. We quickly dispatched personnel to the scene, which took not more than a minute. We deployed an appliance to the scene and realised the fire was a fierce one. The shops had already been destroyed when we got there. We had to deploy another appliance and call for support from Nkoranza, Kintampo, and Wenchi. So we deployed six fire engines.
“Our personnel are professionals. They managed to contain the fire to prevent it from spreading to other facilities. We have contained the fire. A lot of shops were destroyed. The shops that were destroyed are over 100. Some of them were tabletops, she added.
Meanwhile, she has advised Ghanaians to take caution following the harmattan season since it is much easier for outbreaks to strike.
She underscored the need for traders in our markets to stop cooking in the markets, especially during the harmattan season, and take fire safety measures to prevent outbreaks.
She further advised the Ghanaian public to desist from interfering with their work by cutting through their water holes under the guise of assisting them to contain the fire.
