President John Dramani Mahama has told the newly sworn-in ministers of state that Ghanaians will no longer tolerate arrogance and misgovernance, so they must discharge their duties with humility and candour.
He stated that the ministers face an urgent task of resetting Ghana, which has suffered severe crises in many sectors of the economy.
At the swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, President Mahama stated that once the ministers-designate have been vetted and approved by parliament, he will proceed to name the deputy ministers, bringing the total number to 60, as promised to the Ghanaian people, thereby making his government the most lean and efficient in history.
He asserted that Ghanaians expect ministers to discharge their duties in a way that improves their living conditions, provides stable and efficient power supply, food security, cheap and affordable food, access to motorable roads, quality education, combats corruption and corruption-related activities, and has a fair, transparent justice system, among other things.
President Mahama stated that long before the elections, they were aware of the poor state of the economy, and the party made specific promises to address the problems or challenges.
He encouraged Ministers to inform Ghanaians about the state of affairs in their respective sectors while working tirelessly to lift us out of our current situation.
Mr. Mahama said that Ghanaians have, through this election, ”declared their intention to demand the highest standard of governance, and we cannot afford to fail them. This naturally puts a burden of responsibility on us, and we must prove equal to it. t. Ghanaians have shown that the days of tolerance for disrespectful gaslighting by government officials are well and truly over. They will take firm action as they deem fit to punish any administration that takes them for granted”.
I therefore charge you to serve in humility and candour, always remembering that we serve at the pleasure of the Ghanaian people and that the authority we exercise emanates from them. We must exhibit tolerance for their views and work to meet their aspirations. This government will not tolerate arrogance or disrespect for the people who elected us into office. Modesty and prudence must be the guiding principles upon which you, myself, and our vice president function in our governance. The people of Ghana will hold us accountable for the trust that they have placed in our hands. It cannot be business as usual. We must be transparent and fair in all our dealings.
He warned the appointees that the anti-corruption bodies would be empowered to deal with any appointee that would engage in corrupt practices.
He has asked them to begin the process of declaring their assets.
