Management of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has lamented the loss of water in its distribution system.
The company is claiming that only 48 per cent of the water it produces successfully reaches consumers’ homes.
According to the company, 52% of water is lost due to pipeline leakages, illegal connections, and infrastructure inefficiencies.
Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, raised the issue while speaking at a forum.
He noted that as of the end of December 2024, Ghana Water Limited recorded a 52 per cent non-revenue water rate.
Explaining in detail, he indicated that more than half of the water treated and distributed fails to reach consumers.
The situation he said was not the best since it leads to wastage, financial losses, and inadequate supply for customers.
“Furthermore, high levels of water loss due to leakage in pipes, illegal connections and inefficient distribution systems continue to circumvent water loss before it even reaches consumers. As of the end of December 2024, non-revenue water was 52 per cent. So that means the moment we produce water and dispatch, only 48 per cent gets to customers.”
