The criminal jurisdiction of the Accra High Court has acquitted and discharged the Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central Region, Gyakye Quayson.
The lawmaker has been battling this legal case for three years over allegations of perjury and other offences.
Presiding judge Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh, in her view, declared that the prosecution failed to provide enough evidence against him.
The MP was in 2022 dragged to court over charges including deceit of a public officer, forgery of a passport or travel certificates, knowingly making a false declaration, and perjury and false declaration for office.
The ruling was delivered today, Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
The acquittal followed a submission of no case to answer filed by Quayson’s lawyers.
The judge ruled that the MP had not made any false declarations in his 2020 nomination forms.
At the time he declared that he owed allegiance to no country other than Ghana, the court found that he had already submitted an application to renounce his Canadian citizenship—demonstrating that he had no dishonest intent.
The judge further pointed out inconsistencies in the passport summary sheet and statutory declarations provided by prosecution witnesses, undermining the credibility of the evidence presented.
The court in its conclusion stated that there was no basis to call Quayson to open his defence.
