The President of Nigeria, who also serves as ECOWAS Chairman, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has expressed concern that the West African sub-region’s unconstitutional change of government poses a threat to the decades-long democratic gains.
He made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by Bianka Uchuku at the launch of the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary celebrations in Accra on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
The ECOWAS Chairman noted that steps must be taken by the bloc to safeguard democratic credentials in order to enforce peace and security on the bloc.
“Our region continues to grapple with new and evolving threats: violent extremism, climate change and food insecurity. The wave of unconstitutional changes in our region seriously threatens our democratic gains we have painstakingly built.”
On his part, Ghana Foreign Affairs Minister called on member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to use the bloc’s 50th anniversary as a moment of reflection and recommitment to the founding ideals of regional unity, peace, and shared development.
He emphasised the importance of the region reaffirming its commitment to the core principles that inspired the formation of ECOWAS, even as it navigates new realities in a rapidly changing global and regional environment.
