A security analyst, Mr. Isaac Ayittey, has stressed the need for Ghana to do its utmost in supporting efforts to restore stability in troubled Togo.
He believes that what is happening in Togo could have serious implications for Ghana, especially concerning trade, industry, and bilateral relations.
Young people in Togo have led protests challenging the current leadership and demanding new leaders. They are also opposed to constitutional reforms that critics say are designed to extend President Faure Gnassingbé’s hold on power.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the analyst said what is happening in Togo is a result of system failure and negligence. He added that the sub-region, particularly, must do everything possible to help maintain stability.
“Ghana and Togo are neighbors and share strong bilateral relations. Our leaders travel there, and we also invite their leaders to come to Ghana. We should make the President of Togo understand that the presidency is not a monarchy. In any serious democracy, one person cannot rule forever.
Ghana can also learn lessons from what is going on. Every leader should not be consumed by power and ignore the concerns of the people they serve. We are significantly impacted following the ongoing turmoil. I am not sure business owners will be willing to travel to Togo to trade or transact business. So, we should help in restoring peace in Togo to prevent any serious effects,” he added.
