Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi disclosed that there are over 2,500 political parties in his country.
He made this disclosure while addressing Ghanaian lawmakers on the floor of the House on Thursday, July 3, 2025, as part of his state visit to Ghana.
The foreign leader indicated that out of that number, 20 different parties govern various states in India, a country with 22 official languages and thousands of dialects.
Narendra Modi said the country “has the spirit of welcoming everyone” and that same spirit has helped Indians live easily everywhere they go, including Ghana, where Indians “have blended in the society just like sugar in tea.”
He made the remarks after praising Ghana’s democratic credentials, which he described as a shining example in Africa.
According to him, Ghana’s commitment to democratic values and inclusive development makes the country “a beacon of inspiration for the entire African continent.”
“When we look at Ghana, we see a nation that shines with courage, rises above history, and turns every challenge into creativity and grace. Your commitment to democratic ideals and inclusive progress truly makes Ghana a beacon of inspiration for the entire African continent,” he said.
He acknowledged that the histories of Ghana and India bear the scars of colonial rule, but “our spirits have remained free and fearless.” He added that the two countries “draw inspiration and strength from our rich heritage and take pride in our social, cultural and linguistic diversity.”
Modi said the two countries also “take pride in their unity, freedom and dignity.”
‘’Our relationship knows no bound,’’ he declared in his speech, adding that the friendship between Ghana and India “is sweeter than sugar or pineapple.”
