Political analyst Mr Samuel Boateng says the Electoral Commission (EC) ought to be blamed for the thuggery and violent incidents recorded so far in the ongoing rerun in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency.
He stated that the EC failed in its job in the 2024 general election, particularly regarding the Ablekuma North constituency.
Mr Boateng posited that the EC failed to be consistent in its job, and that is what has created all this confusion and needless attacks and assaults on journalists and other stakeholders who are participating in the exercise.
“The Electoral Commission should be blamed for what has happened. They failed in doing their job as expected. From the day of the December 7, 2024, general elections, the EC failed in delivering on its mandate as expected. They claimed there were only three outstanding polling stations, and all of a sudden, they declared that there were 19 others. I strongly believe the EC felt intimidated and allowed fear to cloud their judgement, and there is some power manipulating the EC. The ongoing election has lost its political validity, and the stakeholders don’t even trust the EC.”
He expressed disappointment that the Ghana Police are also looking on hopelessly without taking any action against those engaging in the lawlessness.
The analyst noted that we should stop pretending and touting Ghana as a democratic country because, consistently, we have witnessed the level of lawlessness in almost every election.
He said if we could witness these levels of lawlessness in a rerun of only 19 polling stations, then we have to prepare for the worse in the 2028 general elections.
“We have to condemn what is happening. It is totally disgraceful, and we should not pretend that all is well. The Police Service should be proactive in dealing with the situation instead of being reactive. I don’t know why our politicians, in the past and present, keep doing these things. We cannot trust the NDC and NPP because the two parties will prefer people dying for them to win elections rather than the safety of the people, so the police ought to be proactive.”
